In this performance, Club Guy & Roni explores how empathy can be a driving force in how we live together. In this performance, Club Guy & Roni explores how empathy can be a driving force in how we live together. In the Netherlands, we’ve learned always to be the best versions of ourselves as individuals, independently of others’ needs. If you need help, there must be something wrong with you. This is a society in which self-reliance is the norm, and dependence on others a sign of weakness.
In many other communities, the collective comes to the fore: with less support from government, people rely more on one another. Films and other narratives often tell us that when society collapses, for example following a disaster, people turn into self-centred animals. But in practice, the opposite is true: despite what we might think, empathy is part of our basic human equipment. Islands of empathy is about wanting to belong to a community based on consideration for others.
Islands of empathy (in a sea of chaos) is part of Club Guy & Roni’s Human Odyssey, which investigates feelings like love, fear, happiness, and empathy from an intercultural perspective and in collaboration with an international dance company.
