This oratorio portrays an idyllic painting of nature. The choir is singing about country life in all seasons.
The main characters in the story are the old tenant Simon (bass), his daughter Hanna (soprano) and the young farmer Lukas (tenor), which roles are performed by top soloists. The choir performs the roles of the countrymen and hunters.
This masterpiece premiered in April 1801. It quickly became popular and is still one of the most performed oratorios in music literature.
