Carel Kraayenhof Quartet

Theater

The love of his life for 40 years: the bandoneon!

Carel Kraayenhof has plenty to celebrate this year, and that is why he is going all out. Together with his 'compañeros' of the Carel Kraayenhof Quartet, he is presenting a theater concert with music of four great tango composers: Pugliese, Piazzolla, Salgán, and Troilo. Four extraordinary Argentinian musicians and composers who lived on the heartbeat of tango.

Exactly 40 years ago, Carel played the accordion in the Vondelpark. He was addressed by an Argentinian passerby. "Do you also know the bandoneon; the heart and soul of my city, Buenos Aires?"

Six months later this man returned from Argentina and gave Carel something that would change his life: the bandoneon. Carel never let go of the bandoneon, he has been embracing this extraordinary instrument for 40 years.

Poignant, wry, lyrical, and melodic: all musical moods are amply represented in this musical storytelling show. The brilliant tangos of Pugliese, Salgán, Troilo, and, of course, Piazzolla are enhanced by stories told by the musicians themselves. Stories about four Argentinian men who were intimately connected in music and in person and who each in their own way carried the treasure of tango. But also personal stories from Carel and his Argentinian pianist Juan Pablo, for example, about their encounters with their beloved maestros.
